![]() As soon as the driver even thinks of dialing in opposite lock-a key element of a controlled drift-the ghost of a fun-hating lawyer shuts down the party. The RS rarely skates around corners in smoky, sustained oversteer. When you do manage to break the rear tires free, Drift mode manifests as a brief wag of the tail before the brakes haul things back into line. See how that all comes together with the in-car footage of the Focus RS’s Nürburgring lap above. All that traction is at odds with the RS’s Drift mode. And coupled with adaptive suspension, huge Brembo brakes, aero parts that eliminate lift, and tires that are claimed to provide 1.0 G of cornering grip, the RS has all the ingredients needed to cook up a fast lap time. A six-speed manual transmission sends power to standard all-wheel drive, which has a clutched, torque-vectoring rear differential to help distribute power to the ground. ![]() ![]() Underhood is a 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four rated for 350 horsepower (261 kilowatts) and 350 pound-feet of torque (474 Newton-meters). When you check out its statistics, though, it’s hardly a surprise the Focus RS is an extreme performer. ![]() It’s also only one second behind the lap time that AS recorded for the BMW M3. Based on Auto Sport numbers, the RS outruns such cars as the KTM X-Bow, Porsche Cayman R, Honda NSX-R, and Lamborghini Diablo SV around the Nürburgring. Nonetheless, the time set by the Ford Focus RS in this video is a seriously impressive one. Yet Honda and BMW claim 7:50 and 7:58 ‘Ring times for their cars, respectively. Sport Auto’s lap time with the Civic Type R, for instance, was 8:15, while the BMW M2 managed 8:01. ![]() German publication Auto Sport has conducted its own ‘Ring tests for years, and while the numbers are comparable to other ones run by AS, they can’t necessarily be put up against figures issued by carmakers themselves. ![]()
